A First Time for Everything
For the 1st time in the history of the Texas Opry Theater, we are promoting an event at a venue other than our own here in Weatherford Texas. While we have promoted shows in other venues and towns (Corsicana, etc.) this will be the first time in our city we will do so. The reason for this is 2-fold.
- We want to do our part in promoting the City of Weatherford, and making our city, ‘a premier entertainment destination’. It’s so exciting being a part of my husband’s dream of bringing quality, family entertainment to the City of Weatherford.
- The 2nd reason is demand by our patrons. We have been so blessed and fortunate to see the attendance increasing yearly. The result has been a much needed update to our facility (in progress as I type), and an ability to bring in more quality, and higher priced acts.
This last couple of years we began to experiment with a few multiple, back to back shows. While they have been successful, one night shows were preferred. Our patrons (along with us) kept dreaming of a desire for a bigger venue to do just that. After much discussion with my husband and close friends, we decided to take a leap of faith and make a business change that would allow us to do just that.
2016 was the year in which the Texas Opry restructured to become a Not-for-Profit entity. This step really gives us a chance to take our dream of promoting our city to the next level.
In staying within the theme that has made the Texas Opry successful, on Feb 18th 2017 @ 7pm, the Texas Opry will be presenting 10 Grammy award winner ‘Asleep at the Wheel’ to perform at the Jerry Durant Weatherford High School Auditorium. Come celebrate with us as we get rolling here in 2017!
A good turnout will not only let North Texas know that we here in the City of Weatherford are serious about creating a premier entertainment destination, other top drawing artist as well will see and want to come pay our area a visit. Why deal with the hustle and bustle of Dallas and Tarrant counties when we can relax, and invite others, to relax right here in our own back yard?
2000 tickets are available but at such affordable prices, they are going fast. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of a start of something special here in Parker County and especially within our city. The Jerry Durant auditorium is a beautiful venue and I for one am very proud to show her off. Come join us Feb 18 @ 7pm. You won’t be disappointed.
Ray Benson fell in love with western swing because of its unique combination of elements of American blues, swing and traditional fiddling, but also for its demanding musical chops. Western swing is what Benson calls jazz with a cowboy hat, is a thrill to hear live, and thanks in large part to the Wheels’ 40 years of promotion, is a living and creative genre of music today.
Asleep at the Wheel have been called ‘the post-modern kings of Western Swing,’ forming in 1970 in Paw Paw, West Virginia and eventually settling in Austin, TX in 1973. Celebrating forty years of continuous touring and recording, Ray Benson and his ensemble (over 100 former members and counting) have received 10 GRAMMY Awards and extended the legacy and vitality of a music first popularized by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys.
Asleep at the Wheel is a professional band in absolutely the best sense of the word: their ensemble sense is watertight but their swing is confident and relaxed; their arrangements are period-appropriate but never stodgy; and they always sound like they’re having the time of their lives. Even material as tired as “Get Your Kicks (On Route 66),” which has become the band’s theme song, sounds like a breath of fresh air when this band is playing and singing it.
It’s was a match made in Western Swing heaven when Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel teamed up with famed Texas Playboy Leon Rausch for their first-ever recording together. Rausch first joined Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys in 1958, was featured in the historic 1973 recording session with Wills called ‘For the Last Time’ and has gone on to lead bands such as ‘Bob Wills’ Original Texas Playboys’ and ‘The Playboys II.’ Born in 1927, Rausch is one of the few Texas Playboys still performing.
